Welcome to World Geography! This is a one semester course,
(15 weeks) intended to teach you about the geography of our world.
Add a semester of US Geography and you are set for AP Credit.
ALTERNATIVES: You may stretch each week to two weeks and focus on map drawing,
or you can take your time and stretch it out to a regular school year.

To begin, start with week one on the side bar, and continue with consecutive weeks.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/SVQPfiVzZSI/AAAAAAAAA3g/HlZTP29ndC8/s400/P1012299.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5283865297281049890" />
It would really enhance your learning this semester if you put up a world map.
I put up a US map last semester and I could not believe how much my kids used it. Because it was laminated, they could use white board markers and test themselves
on the time zones etc. They would sit at the dinner table and talk about the
states and things they had learned. This one is available at Costco in a set
& it is laminated, I'm sure Sam's Club has them.

Here is a Table of Contents for this course:

Week 1: Latin America & Deforestation
Week 2: Caribbean & Ocean Currents
Week 3: North Africa & Climate
Week 4: Southern Africa & Drought
Week 5: Europe & Human Migration
Week 6: Russian Domain & Seasons
Week 7: Southwest Asia (Middle East) & Islam
Week 8: Central Asia (the Stans) & Religion
Week 9: South Asia (India) & Economics
Week 10: East Asia (china)& Population
Week 11: South East Asia (Malaysia)& Monsoons
Week 12: Australia & Oceania & Antarctica
Week 13: Canada & USA
Week 14: Review
Week 15: Final Part 1: 7 pages of written & map labeling
Week 16: Final Part 2: Draw your world map

What we will be doing in class each week:

I.You will be learning about a region of the world each week.
A. You will be learning to draw the continents from memory.
B. You will be taking notes in class about the
region you are studying.
C. You will use those notes to finish assignments I give you.

This is what is expected of you as a student:

This class is internet dependent.

1. NO late homework will be accepted, unless you
prearrange a hand-in time with me.

2. It is YOUR responsibility to get missing maps,
instructions or assignment sheets, etc. to complete
the assignment. If I do not email it to you- you
must contact me to get it in a timely manner,
not the day before class.

3. You or a parent must check e-mail every Sunday,
Monday and Wednesday for assignments or updates.
It is not your parent's responsibility to remember
to check e-mail and print assignments , it is yours,
so hound them to get on the computer if you need to.

4. As a student in this class, you are expected to
spend 1 hour a day doing homework. If you finish your
work for the day, spend the rest of the time in review
of previous concepts. This is a meaty class, and many
place names as well as locations will need to be
memorized weekly.

5. You will need to be on the internet to get information and
research. I understand computers break. But you need to contact
me early in the week to let me know that you are not able to
down load the assignment and you need to get hard copies
from me.

Book Recommendation

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/TGtGqqWRaiI/AAAAAAAABfM/riZM4TZCRbQ/s320/P1014552.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506572668126718498" />
My hubbie and I went on a date to Borders this week.
He purchased more Louie L'Amour books and I picked out
this book- "Smithsonian Earth" from the discount section
for $9.99!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/TGtGqLZp1iI/AAAAAAAABfE/q2ftT4_yJAc/s320/P1014553.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506572659819402786" />
Simply beautiful photography.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/TGtGpkvlgkI/AAAAAAAABe8/kSmYdwWHplQ/s320/P1014554.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506572649442411074" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/TGtGpOgAkxI/AAAAAAAABe0/qH47HkcbixI/s320/P1014555.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506572643471495954" />
Stunning.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/TGtJ5HsulkI/AAAAAAAABfc/rSsRYqXy4Ag/s320/P1014558.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5506576215058585154" />
It covers all the major topics you need to know about the Earth.
Tectonics, land; glaciers, deserts, etc. Ocean; currents, tides, coasts, etc. atmosphere & weather. I thought his information regarding the time frame
of radiation poisoning and how you know you have it very interesting.
This is not an assignment or mandatory, just interesting.

There was a day when America was paranoid about Nuclear attack-
My mom, who is 63, used to do the "drop and roll" under her desk
in elementary school during JFK: The Cuban Missile Crisis (2:20)

this is a link to the listing of U.S. nuclear testing sites
Nuclear Testing Gallery

Mrs. Richardon

Trivia: Slavery: Migration or Kidnapping?

The poll is closed:
Migration 17
Kidnapping 10

I KNOW that this poll is not reflective of how
the students in this class feel. I found out some
voted more than once and knew they were voting against
what they believed as a "joke." This is NO JOKE to
the decedents of African Slaves.
We are going to talk about this in class Monday.
Some of you feel so strongly about this being kidnapping,
you have written essays about it and I think that will
really help with our discussion.

Three books recommended by Mrs. Evans are:
Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor (Jr high/high school)
Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis ( Jr. high/ high school)
Roots by Alex Haley (books or VHS available at the library) (Adult)

Original post:
Were the African slaves Immigrants? Note sure? Read further,
then vote in the poll (right)

Webster's, which describes the meaning of the word "immigrate" in the following terms: "to go or remove into a new country, region, or environment in order to settle there." Webster's defines "emigrate" as follows: "to leave one country, state, or region and settle in another, for the purpose of residence." The key words here are "in order to settle there," and "for the purpose of residence." Migration involves the conscious, willfully agency of the migrant.CLUE:
HUMAN MIGRATION (immigration/emigration) IS CONCEIVED AND EXECUTED BY THE MIGRANT."

http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/3898 By Paul Street

Immigration history website
"On arrival, most of the new captives were moved into holding pens, separated from their shipmates, and put up for auction. They then faced the challenge of surviving in a society that had declared each of them to be private property and that was organized to maintain their subservient status. In the eyes of the law and of most non-African Americans, they had no authority to make decisions about their own lives and could be bought, sold, tortured, rewarded, educated, or killed at a slaveholder's will. All the most crucial things in the lives of the enslaved African American-from the dignity of their daily labor to the valor of their resistance, from the comforts of family to the pursuit of art, music, and worship-all had to be accomplished in the face of slave society's attempt to deny their humanity."

From: http://memory.loc.gov/learn/features/immig/alt/african4.html

Do you think the slaves WANTED to live here?
Did they conceive the idea to come here?
Did they have the option to leave freely and go-on to another
territory, the North or home, for example? Mrs. Evans pointed out
that in the story Elijah of Buxton, by Mildred Taylor, the slaves
escaping on the Underground Railroad, or moving after the
Emancipation Proclamation is true migration.

Mrs. Richardson

Goal Setting

Goals are the fuel in the furnace of achievement.
~Brian Tracy

Getting into the habit of goal setting will keep you from cramming
at the end of the week- You know how I feel about cramming-
it leads to loss of valuable information- information you need to retain!

I have added a link to the right for a weekly goal setting chart.
Setting goals will help you get through this class. After Monday (President's Day) and Easter- there will be no holidays until the end of class. This will be
grueling if you do not have a goals set-up to make it through.
But I KNOW you can do it! So start practicing now!

Everyone's week will look different. My sons Josiah and Daniel have
different schedules, as Josiah is gone most of Thursday to volunteer
@ church, so he has to make different decisions as to how much to
put on each day. Daniel thought that goal setting was overwhelming
to do- but once we go the form filled out, he could see how
freeing it was to only have a few things to worry about each day!

"The habits of the child become the character of the man."

Weekly assignments will be a little different too. Sometimes I have
you watch more videos than others, or more vocabulary will be included
as the semester continues on- so goal setting can help you adjust
to the weekly changes.

Goal setting directions:
~Print your goal form.
~Take it to your mom's calendar and write the dates in for that week.
~Look at the assignments I gave you for the week.
~Make decisions about how much you will do for each day,
depending on your schedule.
~Enjoy your week- because you can chillax!

Happy mapping,
Mrs. Richardson

Table of Contents

Table of Contents for 16 Week World Geography course

Week 1: Latin America & Deforestation
Week 2: Caribbean & Ocean Currents
Week 3: North Africa & Climate
Week 4: Southern Africa & DroughtWeek
Week 5: Europe & Human Migration
Week 6: Russian Domain & Seasons
Week 7: Southwest Asia (Middle East) & Islam
Week 8: Central Asia (the Stans) & Religion
Week 9: South Asia (India) & Economics
Week 10: East Asia (china)& Population
Week 11: South East Asia (Malaysia)& Monsoons
Week 12: Australia & Oceania & Antarctica
Week 13: Canada & USA
Week 14: Review
Week 15: Final Part 1: 7 pages of written & map labeling
Week 16: Final Part 2: Draw your world map

Using Your Atlas

Please remember to use your Atlas in book form to
fill out political & physical maps- NOT THE INTERNET!
You need to learn to use your Atlas. Welcome to World Geography! This is a one semester course,
(15 weeks) intended to teach you about the geography of our world.
Add a semester of US Geography and you are set for AP Credit.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_5CC_o15OvyM/SVQPfiVzZSI/AAAAAAAAA3g/HlZTP29ndC8/s400/P1012299.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5283865297281049890" />
It would really enhance your student's learning this semester if
you were able to put up a world map. I put up a US map last semester
and I could not believe how much the kids used it. Because it was
laminated, they could use white board markers and test themselves
on the time zones etc. They would sit at the dinner table and talk
about the states and things they had learned. This one is available
at Costco in a set & it is laminated, I'm sure Sam's Club has them.

Here is a Table of Contents for this course:

Week 1: Latin America & Deforestation
Week 2: Caribbean & Ocean Currents
Week 3: North Africa & Climate
Week 4: Southern Africa & Drought
Week 5: Europe & Human Migration
Week 6: Russian Domain & Seasons
Week 7: Southwest Asia (Middle East) & Islam
Week 8: Central Asia (the Stans) & Religion
Week 9: South Asia (India) & Economics
Week 10: East Asia (china)& Population
Week 11: South East Asia (Malaysia)& Monsoons
Week 12: Australia & Oceania & Antarctica
Week 13: Canada & USA
Week 14: Review
Week 15: Final Part 1: 7 pages of written & map labeling
Week 16: Final Part 2: Draw your world map

What we will be doing in class each week:

I.You will be learning about a region of the world each week.
A. You will be learning to draw the continents from memory.
B. You will be taking notes in class about the
region you are studying.
C. You will use those notes to finish assignments I give you.

This is what is expected of you as a student:

This class is internet dependent.

1. NO late homework will be accepted, unless you
prearrange a hand-in time with me.

2. It is YOUR responsibility to get missing maps,
instructions or assignment sheets, etc. to complete
the assignment. If I do not email it to you- you
must contact me to get it in a timely manner,
not the day before class.

3. You or a parent must check e-mail every Sunday,
Monday and Wednesday for assignments or updates.
It is not your parent's responsibility to remember
to check e-mail and print assignments , it is yours,
so hound them to get on the computer if you need to.

4. As a student in this class, you are expected to
spend 1 hour a day doing homework. If you finish your
work for the day, spend the rest of the time in review
of previous concepts. This is a meaty class, and many
place names as well as locations will need to be
memorized weekly.

5. You will need to be on the internet to get information and
research. I understand computers break. But you need to contact
me early in the week to let me know that you are not able to
down load the assignment and you need to get hard copies
from me.
