Hello! Welcome to World Geography! This is a one semester course,
(15 weeks) intended to teach you about the geography of our world.
Add a semester of US Geography and you are set for AP Credit.
ALTERNATIVES: You may stretch each week to two weeks and focus on map drawing,
or you can take your time and stretch it out to a regular school year.

To begin, start with week one on the side bar, and continue with consecutive weeks.

It would really enhance your learning this semester if you put up a world map.
I put up a US map last semester and I could not believe how much my kids used it. Because it was laminated, they could use white board markers and test themselves
on the time zones etc. They would sit at the dinner table and talk about the
states and things they had learned. This one is available at Costco in a set
& it is laminated, I'm sure Sam's Club has them.

What we will be doing in class each week:

I.You will be learning about a region of the world each week.
A. You will be learning to draw the continents from memory.
B. You will be taking notes in class about the
region you are studying.
C. You will use those notes to finish assignments I give you.

This is what is expected of you as a student:

This class is internet dependent.

1. NO late homework will be accepted, unless you
prearrange a hand-in time with me.

2. It is YOUR responsibility to get missing maps,
instructions or assignment sheets, etc. to complete
the assignment. If I do not email it to you- you
must contact me to get it in a timely manner,
not the day before class.

3. You or a parent must check e-mail every Sunday,
Monday and Wednesday for assignments or updates.
It is not your parent's responsibility to remember
to check e-mail and print assignments , it is yours,
so hound them to get on the computer if you need to.

4. As a student in this class, you are expected to
spend 1 hour a day doing homework. If you finish your
work for the day, spend the rest of the time in review
of previous concepts. This is a meaty class, and many
place names as well as locations will need to be
memorized weekly.

5. You will need to be on the internet to get information and
research. I understand computers break. But you need to contact
me early in the week to let me know that you are not able to
down load the assignment and you need to get hard copies
from me.

Book Recommendation

My hubbie and I went on a date to Borders this week.
He purchased more Louie L'Amour books and I picked out
this book- "Smithsonian Earth" from the discount section
for $9.99!

Simply beautiful photography.

Stunning.

It covers all the major topics you need to know about the Earth.
Tectonics,land; glaciers, deserts, etc. Ocean; currents, tides, coasts, etc. atmosphere & weather. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

It's my new favorite read.

I found this adorable map skills book at Toys 'R Us this week.

It is written and illustrated & rhymed in the classic Dr. Seuss style.

It teaches very basic map skills for Kindergarten and lower elementary.

Trivia: Can You Guess Where It Is?

The answer is NEW ZEALAND! Antarctica may be shared by many
countries, but all the people "living" there need to use
the same time. New Zealand is the place you go to to get to
Antarctica, so that is why they use NZ time!

Hey class- I came across this very interesting free eBook pdf
about Surviving a Nuclear Attack by a retired UK Army Colonel.
Since you have learned a little about the Nuclear Arms Race,
I thought you might get a kick out of paging through it.
It takes a few minutes to download and you can skip through the
pages. I thought his information regarding the time frame
of radiation poisoning and how you know you have it very interesting.
This is not an assignment or mandatory, just interesting.

Trivia: Slavery: Migration or Kidnapping?

I KNOW that this poll is not reflective of how
the students in this class feel. I found out some
voted more than once and knew they were voting against
what they believed as a "joke." This is NO JOKE to
the decedents of African Slaves.
We are going to talk about this in class Monday.
Some of you feel so strongly about this being kidnapping,
you have written essays about it and I think that will
really help with our discussion.

Goal Setting

Getting into the habit of goal setting will keep you from cramming
at the end of the week- You know how I feel about cramming-
it leads to loss of valuable information- information you need to retain!

I have added a link to the right for a weekly goal setting chart.
Setting goals will help you get through this class. After Monday (President's Day) and Easter- there will be no holidays until the end of class. This will be
grueling if you do not have a goals set-up to make it through.
But I KNOW you can do it! So start practicing now!

Everyone's week will look different. My sons Josiah and Daniel have
different schedules, as Josiah is gone most of Thursday to volunteer
@ church, so he has to make different decisions as to how much to
put on each day. Daniel thought that goal setting was overwhelming
to do- but once we go the form filled out, he could see how
freeing it was to only have a few things to worry about each day!

"The habits of the child become the character of the man."

Weekly assignments will be a little different too. Sometimes I have
you watch more videos than others, or more vocabulary will be included
as the semester continues on- so goal setting can help you adjust
to the weekly changes.

Goal setting directions:
~Print your goal form.
~Take it to your mom's calendar and write the dates in for that week.
~Look at the assignments I gave you for the week.
~Make decisions about how much you will do for each day,
depending on your schedule.
~Enjoy your week- because you can chillax!

Using Your Atlas

Please remember to use your Atlas in book form to
fill out political & physical maps- NOT THE INTERNET!
You need to learn to use your Atlas. They are all set-up
differently. Take the time to read the table of contents
for your particular Atlas. Look at the indexes in the back.

The ONLY time you may use the internet is if you
have completely exhausted all book resources & references
in your possession to find a place or physical feature.

If you do not have an atlas that is working for you, ask your
mom to pick up another for you. We have three, and we can pretty
much find everything between all of them.

Week 16: World Map Final

of what you can accomplish this semester!

Draw one world map from MEMORY EACH DAY, using the 17" x 22" papers I gave you.

See what my class accomplished in 2009!

What to use for homework & bring to the final:
Sharpened pencils, fine-tip pen to label, color pencils & CONFIDENCE!
You will do great! I will supply the poster board with grids on it.
Final poster board size will be 14 X 22. (not 17 X 22)

Extra Credit:
labeling 50 states
labeling any other country
Labeling the provinces of Australia or Canada
any seas, bays, lakes, rivers
Labeling the countries of Oceania

Think about how you want your final map to look.
~Do you want to use colors? Bring color pencils.
~Do you want to add little extra drawings of ships, sea monsters,
compass rose, or Poseidon with his Triton if you have time?
Practice drawing them now!

HOMEWORK FOR THIS WEEK:
TEST yourself by drawing from memory!!!
Draw one world map from MEMORY each day. Then get an Atlas to correct it.
1. Clearly defined shape of the continents and islands
(sri lanka, iceland etc.) Do not label the continents!
2. Proportion
3. Island groupings of Melanesia/ Micronesia/ Polynesia (remember:angles)
4. label from MEMORY- then go back to add more or correct
5. List of Watery things to label.PRINT it here.
6. Major great circles 5 use this link.
(Equator, Prime Meridian, Arctic/Antarctic circles,
Tropic of Capricorn/Cancer)draw these on- know what areas they go across.

DUE: 4 world maps- it is OK if there are erasing marks-
you SHOULD have erasing marks- none of you can draw the continents
perfectly on the first try. YET! ;o)

all the work you have done this semester. WOW!

draw the entire thing, with Central America and all, just like
it looks on the printout. You will have to turn your drawing paper.

both of your world maps.(This can be on a regular sheet of paper.)

PRINT: Goal Setting Chart

Draw: 11 maps of the Middle East using the 9.2 map I gave you
with the outline on it. Draw borders & label each of the 11 maps
with the countries & rivers of the Middle East.

DRAW: 1 World map with all the continents and
label the oceans and seas you have studied so far.
Use this map to see how drawing the PM, Equator and Tropics of
Capricorn & Cancer will help you center your drawings.

NO TRACING! I know- you will have to look at a world map as
you are drawing it- that is OK, you are practicing drawing
the world by heart! Just think how easy the final will be!

Week 3: North Africa & Climates

When you draw North Africa- just do the continent, not Asia.
But you do need to draw it just to the Equator
label countries, the Nile, the oceans & seas around it.
*** Draw one EACH of South America and Caribbean. Do the BEST
drawing you can do from memory of the outlines/islands and physical features.

Use a grid system (latitude & longitude) to draw the Caribbean islands-
3 each day -try to remember the longitudes they are in
between, as well as the general land masses, like Florida,
Venezuela & larger islands. You will also draw South America
one time each day. So you will have

In class we learned how to draw the continents/countries from
memory, so you need to practice this week EVERY DAY! You cannot
learn by cramming the drawings at the end of the week. Do not
cheat yourself out of a good test grade by not studying a bit
every day.

Assignments for the Week:

DRAW: Using the 4.1 map of Latin America and blank paper to
make 3 drawings of it EACH DAY! You will turn in 12 drawings to me
on Monday. Use the skills we talked about to memorize the shape of
the continent. You need to memorize it. Please write your name on each sheet!

World Geography: What to Expect

Hello! Welcome to World Geography! This is a one semester course,
(15 weeks) intended to teach you about the geography of our world.
Add a semester of US Geography and you are set for AP Credit.

It would really enhance your student's learning this semester if
you were able to put up a world map. I put up a US map last semester
and I could not believe how much the kids used it. Because it was
laminated, they could use white board markers and test themselves
on the time zones etc. They would sit at the dinner table and talk
about the states and things they had learned. This one is available
at Costco in a set & it is laminated, I'm sure Sam's Club has them.

What we will be doing in class each week:

I.You will be learning about a region of the world each week.
A. You will be learning to draw the continents from memory.
B. You will be taking notes in class about the
region you are studying.
C. You will use those notes to finish assignments I give you.

This is what is expected of you as a student:

This class is internet dependent.

1. NO late homework will be accepted, unless you
prearrange a hand-in time with me.

2. It is YOUR responsibility to get missing maps,
instructions or assignment sheets, etc. to complete
the assignment. If I do not email it to you- you
must contact me to get it in a timely manner,
not the day before class.

3. You or a parent must check e-mail every Sunday,
Monday and Wednesday for assignments or updates.
It is not your parent's responsibility to remember
to check e-mail and print assignments , it is yours,
so hound them to get on the computer if you need to.

4. As a student in this class, you are expected to
spend 1 hour a day doing homework. If you finish your
work for the day, spend the rest of the time in review
of previous concepts. This is a meaty class, and many
place names as well as locations will need to be
memorized weekly.

5. You will need to be on the internet to get information and
research. I understand computers break. But you need to contact
me early in the week to let me know that you are not able to
down load the assignment and you need to get hard copies
from me.
